Who is pushing so hard to put and end to the Railroad in Huntington Beach?
Watch the Lumber Yard stacks get moved along the Wintersburg Spur tracks HERE
Lumber is primarily transported on centerbeam flatcars (also known as centerbeams or lumber racks), which are specialized railcars designed to carry bundled building materials. These cars feature a longitudinal I-beam running down the center, allowing dimensional lumber, plywood, OSB, and wallboard to be stacked symmetrically on both sides and secured with built-in straps.
A standard 73-foot centerbeam car can carry approximately 200,000 pounds of freight, which is enough framing lumber to build about six homes.
** This method is more efficient than trucking, as a single rail car can haul the equivalent of three to four trucks, significantly reducing highway congestion and carbon emissions.**
Unlike older boxcars that required manual loading, centerbeams are loaded and unloaded quickly using forklifts on both sides of the central beam.
